Universal Ambulance Dispatch Office at 1511 14th St SW
Surrounded by phones on the dispatch desk is Earl Schaeber (this was prior to a telephone having multiple lines). Some of the phones were for incoming, one was a direct line to the City Police, others were direct lines to hospitals. The two phones on the right hand wall were direct lines to Universal's other two bases (a red N on one indicates it is for the Northeast station). Above Earl's right shoulder is the punch clock for recording each car's arrival and destination times.
On the far right of the photo is a small hole in the wall. The room behind the dispatch office was sleeping quarters for the night crew and was equipped with a bunk bed. The dispatcher could hand his call sheet through this opening if the call was for our base.
